Physical Education

Intent

At Langmoor Primary School, Physical Education is an integral part of our curriculum and we strive to create a culture which aims to inspire an active generation to enjoy PE, encourage each other and understand the importance of good health. We provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities demonstrating both determination and resilience. We intend to deliver high quality teaching and a varied program of activity to ensure that all children progress physically. Our curriculum aims to improve the well-being and fitness of all children, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. We currently use the PE hub for our curriculum

Implementation

  • PE at Langmoor Primary School provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; invasion games, net & wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor & adventure.
  • The curriculum maps set out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year in each year group and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
  • Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extracurricular activities both in and outside of curriculum time. Active play times with our sports coach, play leaders and scrap store.
  • Meaningful movement is an integral part of our teaching starting in EYFS, built into all types of PE lessons throughout the school, staff knowledge and understanding and through interventions ran 3 times a week with an LSA. All building strength to support children’s learning in class.
  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events and participate in sporting leagues within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.
  • Each year a small group of Year 5 and 6 children are invited to become Sports Leaders for the school. They develop into sporting role models for the younger children, assisting with lunch-time clubs, our annual Sports day and any other Sporting activities. We also have playground leaders for lunchtimes who encourage the children to get active.
  • Children participate in workshops covering a variety of sports throughout the year. For example archery, outdoor and adventure, basketball and badminton, again providing the children with an opportunity to develop, improve their fitness and to try something new.
  • Children in Year 4 and 5 swim once a week for the whole year to ensure all children leave us with this essential life skill.
  • We are developing the use of the “Daily boost”, to help meet the government target of all children being active for at least 60 minutes a day. Physical activity is being embedded throughout the school day through initiatives such as GoNoodle. Teach Active, BBC Supermovers, Just Dance and Imoves active blasts.
  • Active travel is encouraged, and we take part in Walk, Scoot or Ride to School events.
  • We also take part in Move it March which is organised by LSLSSP and the children are encouraged to record their moving minutes during this month.

Impact

We help motivate and give the children the confidence and fundamental skills needed to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. All children have access to a thorough swimming program to ensure they have this essential life skill, meeting and surpassing the requirements of the National Curriculum. Our children are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. We equip our children with the necessary skills to ensure that they have or can develop a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
